Lingering Dryad

She waits - for spring or death, whichever comes first. The winter has taken her leaves, but time has taken her spirit. These days it seems like the humans scorn the trees, as if they're only useful as kitchen tables or Starbucks paper cups. The trees stand in the way of new construction, of skyrises and super highways, of progress. The humans used to love nature, even worship it. Their roots would drink fresh, pure water; their leaves would bask in the unadulterated sunlight; their fruit would feed mischievous children who dared climb their branches. But now: the chemicals taint the water; the sky is clouded with car exhaust and factory fumes; and the once-sweet fruit is now bitter with those same contaminants. And the saddest thing is that the humans don't realize that everything they do to the trees, they do to themselves, in the name of progress.
